Based on Presidential Regulation No. 2 of 2022, entrepreneurs are individuals who operate, create, and/or develop a business.
This Presidential Regulation categorizes entrepreneurs into two types: "starting entrepreneurs" and "established entrepreneurs".
"Starting entrepreneurs" are business owners working independently, and those assisted by non-permanent/unpaid laborers.
"Established entrepreneurs" are business owners assisted by permanent/paid laborers.
Based on this definition and data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), as of August 2023, there were approximately 56.5 million entrepreneurs in Indonesia.
Around 52 million of them were starting entrepreneurs, comprising 32.2 million working independently and 19.8 million assisted by non-permanent/unpaid laborers.
Meanwhile, approximately 4.5 million were classified as established entrepreneurs, those assisted by permanent/paid laborers.
Thus, in August 2023, the ratio of starting entrepreneurs reached 35.21%, while the ratio of established entrepreneurs was 3.04% of the total national workforce.
When broken down by educational background, the majority of Indonesian entrepreneurs are elementary school (SD) graduates.
According to BPS data, as of August 2023, there were approximately 17.2 million entrepreneurs who were only elementary school graduates. This group represents 30.52% of the total national entrepreneurs.
This group of elementary school graduate entrepreneurs consists of:
* 9.3 million working independently (starting entrepreneurs);
* 6.9 million working with the assistance of non-permanent/unpaid laborers (starting entrepreneurs); and
* 956 thousand working with the assistance of permanent/paid laborers (established entrepreneurs).
Entrepreneurs with the least representation come from a diploma (DI/II/III) educational background, numbering 873 thousand or 1.55% of the total national entrepreneurs.
Furthermore, entrepreneurs who have never attended school, and those who have completed university education, are also relatively few, with details as shown in the graph.
