Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupted Saturday Afternoon; Status Raised to Alert

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 2:09 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 28 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 500 meters above the peak or 2,084 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 213 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 3, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 356 seconds.

Then, there were 2 tremor earthquakes with amplitudes of 2.9-3.7 millimeters and durations of 45-360 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.2-3.7 millimeters and durations of 70-240 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the north-northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,327 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (801 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 447 times.
