This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Nine countries recorded increased deaths this week, while seven others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Argentina, Canada, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay. A total of 182 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Friday, August 19, 2022, representing weekly growth exceeding 50 percent.
Argentina ranks first, with a 140 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded 72 deaths in the country, up from 30 the previous week.
Canada follows, with a 137.5 percent weekly increase in deaths. The country reported 76 deaths, compared to 32 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Paraguay saw an 88.89% increase in deaths, Trinidad and Tobago recorded 14 deaths (a 55.56% increase), and Uruguay recorded three deaths (a 50% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas occurred in the United States, with 2,193 deaths. This represents an 11.03% decrease compared to the previous week. Brazil follows with 1,222 deaths (down 14.61%), Peru with 371 deaths (up 9.76%), Mexico with 361 deaths (down 30.44%), and Chile with 191 deaths (down 3.54%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 4,662. This accounts for 32.16 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 14,497. The death toll in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 5,365 deaths.
