Several steps must be completed if Indonesian citizens wish to travel to the United States (US). One of them is obtaining a visa.
According to the Immigration website of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (KemenkumHAM), a visa is a document indicating that the government of the destination country has approved the visitor's entry. This means the visitor's arrival is through legal channels.
The requirements for a US visa are quite detailed. One requirement is to include a minimum amount of savings.
This is to ensure the prospective visitor is financially secure during their stay in the US and can return to their home country without running out of money. Furthermore, the amount of savings will assure the authorities that the prospective visitor can support themselves while in the country.
Data from Immigration processed by *CNN Indonesia* shows that the minimum savings requirement for a US visa depends on the length of the prospective visitor's stay.
For a 15-day stay, the minimum savings required is approximately US$5,000-US$10,000, equivalent to Rp74 million-Rp148 million.
For those wishing to go to the US to pursue studies, the minimum amount required in savings for a student visa is more than US$10,000.
In addition to the minimum savings, prospective visitors must also prepare for visa application fees, which vary.
For non-immigrant visas, such as those for tourists, students, and businesspeople, applicants must pay US$160, or approximately Rp2.3 million. Meanwhile, US visas for religious leaders, religious workers, or employees can cost around US$190, or Rp2.8 million.
Payment of the visa application fee does not guarantee visa approval. If the visa application is rejected, for example, due to insufficient qualifications, the fee is forfeited.
