The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reported no new cases of acute kidney injury (AKI) during the period of November 2-15, 2022.
A total of 324 acute kidney injury cases have been recorded in Indonesia. However, currently, only 14 patients are still hospitalized.
Kemenkes spokesperson Mohammad Syahril explained that 9 patients are being treated at RSCM Jakarta, 2 in Aceh, and 1 each in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and the Riau Islands. The hospitalized patients are predominantly in stage 3 of the disease.
"Stage 3 is the most severe, with significant kidney damage. Currently, all patients are receiving intensive care in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). We are also administering Fomepizole (an antidote), and hopefully, this will help," said Syahril in an online press conference on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.
The fourteen patients still hospitalized reportedly have no comorbidities; their acute kidney injury is solely attributed to ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG) poisoning from syrups/liquid medications.
"Treatment takes time; we hope all patients will recover soon," said Syahril.
Following the Ministry of Health's restriction on the consumption of syrups containing additional solvents, a decrease in acute kidney injury cases has been observed throughout Indonesia.
According to Kemenkes reports, the number of hospitalized patients due to acute kidney injury peaked on October 28, 2022, at 84 patients. The number has since steadily decreased until mid-November 2022.
