The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.35 million cases by Thursday, February 2, 2023. According to GISAID data, Mozambique recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 561 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Mozambique currently represents 0.01 percent of the global total.
Next is China (PRC), which recorded a 30.81 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 4.16 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Japan saw a 3.64 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 361,400 cases compared to the previous week; Brazil recorded 94,143 new Omicron cases (a 2.21% increase); and Canada saw a 2.12 percent increase, reaching 245,980 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, 33,944 Omicron cases were recorded by yesterday's data, a 0.06 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
