This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Eight countries recorded increased deaths this week, while six others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Guyana, Argentina, Canada, Paraguay, and Guatemala. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, August 18, 2022, amounted to 349, with a weekly growth exceeding 34.94 percent.
Guyana recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 200 percent. Worldometer recorded three deaths in the country, an increase compared to the previous week's single death.
Next is Argentina, which recorded 125 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. The country reported 90 more deaths than the previous week's 40. Deaths in Canada increased by 82.81%, Paraguay by 42.11%, and Guatemala by 112 (a 34.94% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 1,924 deaths. This represents a 21.18% decrease compared to the previous week. Following this, Brazil recorded 1,230 deaths (down 18.87%), Mexico 394 deaths (down 28.88%), Peru 349 deaths (up 13.31%), and Chile 188 deaths (down 11.32%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 4,516. This accounts for 33.18 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 13,612. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 5,323.
