According to the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), several vaccines are needed for the prevention of hepatitis in children under two years old (baduta), administered in stages:
* Hepatitis B vaccine (HB-0): given to infants less than 24 hours old.
* DPT-HB-Hib vaccine 1: given to infants at 2 months old.
* DPT-HB-Hib vaccine 2: given to infants at 3 months old.
* DPT-HB-Hib vaccine 3: given to infants at 4 months old.
The HB-0 vaccine prevents hepatitis B, which can cause cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.
The DPT-HB-Hib vaccines (stages 1-3) prevent six diseases: diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, hepatitis B, pneumonia, and meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord).
However, it is estimated that many Indonesian children have not received this vaccination series.
According to the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) report, only 83.1% of children under two years old (baduta) have received the basic HB-0 immunization.
Meanwhile, the proportion of baduta receiving the DPT-HB-Hib vaccines (stages 1-3) has only reached 60%-65% nationally, as shown in the graph.
"Delayed or incomplete immunization in children is one of the obstacles in efforts to improve children's immunity," explained the Kemenkes on its official website, Monday (11/4/2022).
