The Indonesian internet has recently been abuzz with discussions about air quality around people's homes, particularly in Jakarta. According to IQAir data, Jakarta frequently appeared on the list of cities with the worst air quality in the world in August 2023.
So, how do Indonesians perceive the air quality in their surroundings?
According to a survey by Kurious-Katadata Insight Center (KIC), the majority of respondents (57.4%) felt that the air around them was affected by dust and vehicle exhaust.
Furthermore, 47.9% of respondents felt that the air temperature in their surroundings had increased. Conversely, 34.4% of respondents considered the air quality in their surroundings to be normal or usual.

Only a small percentage of respondents (15.4%) considered the air in their surroundings to be pristine and clean, feeling refreshing. A small number also felt the air had a pungent odor (13.3%).
The Kurious-KIC survey involved 512 respondents from various regions across Indonesia, with 54.6% male and 45.4% female respondents.
Over half of the respondents were from outside Jakarta but within Java (62.5%), followed by respondents from Sumatra (14.6%) and DKI Jakarta (14.2%). The proportion of respondents from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku-Papua ranged from 0.2% to 3.3%.
