This week's Covid-19 statistics in Africa show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, six countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 10 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Botswana, Malawi, Togo, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. The total number of deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, July 30, 2022, was 58, with weekly growth exceeding 40 percent.
Botswana ranks first, with a 133.33 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded seven deaths in the country, up from three the previous week.
Malawi follows with a 100 percent weekly increase in deaths. Yesterday's daily death toll in the country was eight. Togo recorded two deaths (up 100%), Zimbabwe saw a 50% increase in deaths, and South Africa recorded 35 deaths (up 40%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Africa occurred in Tunisia, with 70 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 2.94% compared to the previous week. Following Tunisia, South Africa reported 35 deaths (up 40%), Morocco 24 deaths (down 33.33%), Malawi eight deaths (up 100%), and Botswana seven deaths (up 133.33%).
Total deaths in Africa over the past seven days were 172. This accounts for 1.23 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, totaling 14,025. The number of deaths in Africa is down compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 179 deaths.
