This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 12 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while six others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Suriname, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, and Peru. The total deaths in these five countries as of Wednesday, July 20, 2022, amounted to 635, with a weekly growth exceeding 28.93 percent.
Suriname ranks first, with a 100 percent increase in weekly deaths. In this country, Worldometer recorded two deaths, a 100 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Next is Argentina, which recorded 60 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. However, daily data shows a 16.67% decrease in deaths compared to the previous day. Meanwhile, deaths in Mexico increased by 40.13%, deaths in Ecuador increased by 37.5%, and Peru recorded 156 deaths (a 28.93% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in Brazil, with 1,763 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 5.44% compared to the previous week. Following Brazil, the highest number of deaths in the Americas was recorded in the United States with 1,753 deaths (a 1.27% increase), Mexico with 426 deaths (a 40.13% increase), Chile with 262 deaths (a 6.07% increase), and Peru with 156 deaths (a 28.93% increase).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 4,753. This accounts for 43.06 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 11,037. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 4,547 deaths.
