This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, 14 countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 14 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Vietnam, Armenia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Iraq. The total number of deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, August 20, 2022, was 359, with a weekly growth rate exceeding 66.67 percent.
Vietnam recorded the highest increase in Covid-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 300 percent. Worldometer recorded eight deaths in the country, an increase from the two deaths reported the previous week.
Armenia follows with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 200 percent. The country reported six deaths, compared to two the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Pakistan reported 35 deaths (up 133.33%), the Philippines saw a 79.41% increase in deaths, and Iraq reported five deaths (up 66.67%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 1,632 deaths. This represents an 18.43% increase compared to the previous week. Following Japan, the Islamic Republic of Iran recorded 484 deaths (up 3.2%), South Korea recorded 372 deaths (up 20.78%), India recorded 325 deaths (down 6.34%), and the Philippines recorded 305 deaths (up 79.41%).
A total of 4,009 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 27.59 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, which totaled 14,531. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which saw 3,585 deaths.
