Malaysia Records 17,150 New Covid-19 Cases Amidst Political Turmoil

Malaysia recorded its highest daily number of Covid-19 cases on August 1, 2021, reaching 17,150. The total number of coronavirus cases in the country has reached 1,130,422.

The largest increase in daily cases came from Selangor with 6,326 cases. Kuala Lumpur also contributed the most cases with 2,086.

Other states with the highest daily case counts were Kedah with 1,511 cases, Johor with 1,045 cases, and Sabah with 1,002 cases. Meanwhile, Putrajaya added 72 cases, Perlis 21 cases, and Labuan 5 cases.

Previously, the highest record of new cases was recorded on Saturday, July 31, 2021, with 17,786 daily cases. Besides the health crisis, Malaysia is also experiencing internal political turmoil.

The internal turmoil stems from demands for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to resign over his handling of the Covid-19 situation. This was triggered by the revocation of six emergency ordinances (EOs) related to Covid-19 without the consent of the Malaysian King.
