The Ministry of Health (MOH) has released guidelines on safe cholesterol levels in the body.
Generally, cholesterol is divided into two types: good cholesterol (High-Density Lipoprotein/HDL) and bad cholesterol (Low-Density Lipoprotein/LDL).
The MOH states that good cholesterol, or HDL, absorbs cholesterol and carries it back to the liver, which then removes it from the body.
Conversely, bad cholesterol can accumulate in the walls of blood vessels, causing blockages and increasing the risk of several diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes.
"Individuals with high cholesterol levels need to adjust their diet to avoid various dangerous diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes. One way is by consuming cholesterol-lowering foods," the MOH wrote on its official website.

Cholesterol-lowering foods can include those with low LDL, or bad cholesterol. They can also include foods with higher HDL, or good cholesterol.
HDL has a minimum limit of 40 mg/dL. HDL is considered low if it is below this level.
LDL is considered high if it is in the range of 130-159 mg/dL and very high above 160 mg/dL.
Total cholesterol is considered high if it ranges from 200-239 mg/dL and very high if it is above 240 mg/dL.
"These cholesterol levels can be determined through a blood test," said the MOH.
