This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Nine countries recorded increased deaths this week, while eight others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Suriname, Ecuador, Honduras, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago. A total of 54 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Wednesday, October 26, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 27.27 percent.
Suriname recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 300 percent. Worldometer recorded four deaths in the country, a 300 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Next is Ecuador, which recorded a 300 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. The country reported four more deaths than the previous week's total of one. Honduras reported 30 deaths (up 172.73%), Paraguay saw a 100% increase in deaths, and Trinidad and Tobago recorded 14 deaths (up 27.27%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 1,080 deaths. Death reports in the US decreased by 21.85% compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 421 deaths (up 16.94%), Canada 144 deaths (up 13.39%), Chile 122 deaths (up 10.91%), and Mexico 53 deaths (down 24.29%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 1,911. This accounts for 24.41 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 7,830 deaths. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,183 deaths.
