The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.99 million cases by Wednesday, December 21, 2022. According to GISAID data, Oman recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 145 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Oman currently represents 0 percent of the global total.
Guatemala follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in the country grew by 11.44 percent, with 1,637 new cases reported. The daily increase in Omicron cases shows an 11.44 percent rise compared to the previous day's 1,469 cases.
Next, the increase in Omicron cases in Kuwait rose by 9.75 percent to 518 cases compared to the previous week; in Spain, the increase was 7.18 percent, reaching 82,147 cases compared to the previous week; and in the Republic of Moldova, the increase was 6.75 percent, reaching 506 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, the increase in Omicron cases in Indonesia has reached 30,833 cases, a 0.69 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges all parties to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
