The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for toddlers (6 months to 4 years old) and children (5 to 11 years old).
The vaccine, named Comirnaty Children, is administered to toddlers in a 3 mcg/0.2 mL volume across three injections. The first two doses are given three weeks apart, followed by a third dose at least eight weeks after the second.
For children, the volume is 10 mcg/0.2 mL, given in two injections three weeks apart.
"The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children has a different formulation and strength than the Comirnaty vaccine for adolescents and adults. Therefore, Comirnaty Children cannot be used on individuals aged 12 and above," said BPOM Head Penny K. Lukito, as reported by *CNN Indonesia* on Tuesday (27/12/2022).
BPOM claims to have tested the vaccine's safety and efficacy. Studies show that children who received a full dose of the Pfizer vaccine had immunity comparable to the 16-25 age group who had been vaccinated.
BPOM studies also show the vaccine has a tolerable safety profile. Side effects found in children aged 6 months to under 5 years were generally mild, such as swelling or enlarged lymph nodes.
BPOM first granted emergency use authorization for the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine on July 14, 2021. This was then extended to booster shots on January 2, 2022, and to adolescents aged 16-18 on August 2, 2022.
