Indonesia's national football team will soon compete in the June 2024 FIFA Matchday.
In this Asian World Cup qualifier, Indonesia will face Iraq on June 6, 2024, followed by the Philippines on June 11, 2024.
The All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) and national team coach Shin Tae-yong have announced the 23 players who will participate in the event.
Thirteen players (57%) are Indonesian nationals, citizens since birth.
Ten players (43%) are naturalized citizens, originally foreign nationals who have become Indonesian citizens. However, these 10 naturalized players also have Indonesian ancestry through their parents or grandparents.
This distinction between "national players" and "naturalized players" was highlighted by Putra Nababan, a member of Commission X of the DPR (House of Representatives) from the PDI-P faction.
On Monday (June 3, 2024), Putra called for a national team composition with more national players than naturalized players.
"Ideally, 60% should be national players. Don't fill it all with naturalized players. If this goes to the DPR, it's a political issue; if it comes to the DPR, it's not a matter of sports. There needs to be trust," said Putra Nababan, as quoted from the TVR Parlemen YouTube channel.
