COVID-19 statistics in Asia this week still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. This week, 16 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while 13 others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Nepal, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Syria, and the Philippines. The total deaths in these five countries as of Tuesday, August 16, 2022, amounted to 263, with a weekly growth exceeding 129 percent.
Nepal ranks first, with a 325 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded 17 deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's reported four deaths.
Next is Vietnam, which recorded deaths 300 percent higher than the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as four, higher than the previous week's one death. Deaths in Afghanistan increased by 200%, Syria recorded seven deaths (up 133.33%), and deaths in the Philippines increased by 129%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 1,492 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 38.4% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, the Islamic Republic of Iran recorded 483 deaths (up 6.15%), South Korea recorded 360 deaths (up 60.71%), India recorded 339 deaths (down 0.88%), and Thailand recorded 232 deaths (up 2.65%).
The total deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 3,793. This accounts for 26.19 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 14,482. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,169 deaths.
