This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, five countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 18 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Lebanon, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, December 29, 2022, amounted to 2,937, with a weekly growth exceeding 7.2 percent.
Lebanon recorded the highest increase in Covid-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 100 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded two deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's single death.
Next is Vietnam, which recorded 50 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. However, daily death data shows a 25% decrease compared to the previous day. Meanwhile, deaths in Hong Kong increased by 38.4%, deaths in Japan increased by 26.62%, and South Korea recorded 402 deaths (a 7.2% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan with 2,202 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 26.62% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea reported 402 deaths (up 7.2%), Hong Kong reported 328 deaths (up 38.4%), Taiwan reported 187 deaths (down 6.03%), and the Philippines reported 167 deaths (down 15.66%).
The total number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days was 3,610. This accounts for 35.77 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 10,093 deaths. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,191 deaths.
