The Indonesian Ministry of Health has detected 9,145 sequences of COVID-19 variants of concern (VOC) in Indonesia until January 21, 2022. The Delta variant (B.1.617.2) still dominates with 7,847 sequences.
The majority of these Delta variants originating from India were found in Jakarta (2,229 sequences), followed by West Java (1,189 sequences).
Furthermore, 1,186 sequences of the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) have been detected in Indonesia. The majority of this variant, first detected in South Africa, were found in Jakarta (894 sequences) and Banten (155 sequences).
Meanwhile, 81 sequences of the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7) from the UK, and 22 sequences of the Beta variant (B.1.351) from South Africa were detected.
There were also 7 sequences of the Eta variant (B.1.525) and 2 sequences of the Kappa variant (B.1.617.1) detected.
The emergence of various new COVID-19 variants in Indonesia, especially the more contagious Omicron variant, should increase public awareness. Therefore, the public is urged to diligently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. In addition, the public is also encouraged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility to minimize transmission.
