This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Eleven countries recorded increased deaths this week, while five others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Colombia, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, and Suriname. A total of 200 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Thursday, June 16, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 50 percent.
Colombia recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 350 percent. Worldometer recorded nine deaths in the country, an increase from the two reported the previous week.
Guyana follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 100 percent. Yesterday's daily death toll was four. Honduras recorded two deaths (up 100%), Mexico 182 deaths (up 55.56%), and Suriname three deaths (up 50%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas occurred in the United States, with 1,476 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 16.89% compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 1,004 deaths (up 17.7%), Canada 273 deaths (up 36.5%), Mexico 182 deaths (up 55.56%), and Chile 122 deaths (up 12.96%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 3,327. This accounts for 37.56 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 8,858 deaths. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,365 deaths.
