This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. This week, 12 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while seven others reported deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Colombia, Mexico, Guyana, and Chile. The total deaths in these five countries as of Tuesday, July 12, 2022, amounted to 621, with a weekly growth exceeding 33.14 percent.
Honduras ranks first, with a 400 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded five deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's single death.
Next is Colombia, which recorded 90.24 percent more deaths than the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 78, higher than the 41 recorded the previous week. Deaths in Mexico increased by 45.19%, Guyana by seven deaths (up 40%), and Chile by 33.14%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in Brazil, with 1,642 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 9.83% compared to the previous week. Following Brazil, the United States recorded 1,523 deaths (down 2.12%), Mexico recorded 302 deaths (up 45.19%), Chile recorded 229 deaths (up 33.14%), and Canada recorded 190 deaths (up 31.03%).
The total deaths in the Americas over the past seven days were 4,338. This accounts for 43.99 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 9,861. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,985 deaths.
