Based on Worldometers data as of 08:42 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) on July 5, 2021, Indonesia had detected 2,284,084 cases of COVID-19. 295,228 cases, or 12.9%, were active cases requiring hospitalization or self-isolation. Indonesia's ranking of active COVID-19 cases rose to sixth in the world, up from ninth the previous week.
Jakarta was the province with the highest number of new COVID-19 cases, adding 10,485 new cases. West Java and Central Java followed with 4,458 and 2,955 cases, respectively.
The surge in COVID-19 cases in Indonesia resulted in an oxygen shortage. Consequently, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, ordered that industrial oxygen supplies be utilized to meet medical needs.
Daily medical oxygen needs reached 800 tons. Annual oxygen production capacity is 225,000 tons.
Meanwhile, the United States still holds the top position with the highest number of active COVID-19 cases globally. The disease has nearly reached 34.6 million cases, with 4,874,268 cases, or 14.1%, being active. This proportion decreased from 14.3% the previous week.
The government continues to urge the public to maintain social distancing, wear masks, and wash their hands with soap and running water. Everyone is also encouraged to reduce mobility and avoid crowds to curb the spread of COVID-19.
