The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.36 million cases by Sunday, October 9, 2022. According to GISAID data, Mauritania recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with seven new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Mauritania currently represents 0 percent of the global total.
Next is New Zealand, which recorded an 18.02 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 14.65 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Ghana saw a 12.36 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 1,336 cases compared to the previous week. Russia reported 15,412 new Omicron cases (a 9.22% increase), and Iceland saw a 9.13 percent increase, reaching 1,601 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, 23,672 Omicron cases were recorded, representing a 0.03 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its first detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
