Based on data from the Indonesian Covid-19 Task Force as of 10:04 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) on Monday, June 21, 2021, Indonesia had detected 1,989,909 cases of Covid-19. 142,719 cases, or 7.2%, were active cases requiring hospitalization or self-isolation. This surge in active cases raised Indonesia's global ranking of active Covid-19 cases to 12th, up from 15th the previous week.
Jakarta became the province with the highest number of new Covid-19 cases, adding 5,582 new cases. Central Java and West Java followed with 2,195 and 2,009 cases, respectively.
Quoting Antara News Agency, the Ministry of Health estimates that the peak of cases will occur at the end of June 2021. The government is urged to implement social restrictions, as current programs are no longer effective. Furthermore, testing and contact tracing within the community need to be improved.
Meanwhile, the United States still holds the first position with the highest number of active Covid-19 cases globally. The disease has reached 34.4 million cases, with 5,077,520 cases, or 14.8%, classified as active. This proportion decreased from 15.5% the previous week.
The government continues to urge the public to practice social distancing, wear masks, and wash their hands with soap and running water. Everyone is also encouraged to reduce mobility and avoid crowds.
