This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 15 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while 12 other countries recorded deaths, but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Iraq, Armenia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and the Philippines. The total deaths in these five countries as of Sunday, August 21, 2022, amounted to 337, with a weekly growth exceeding 56.16 percent.
Iraq recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 300 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded four deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported one death.
Following Iraq is Armenia, with weekly death growth reaching 200 percent. The number of deaths in this country was reported as six, compared to two in the previous week.
Among the top five, other countries include Myanmar with a 200% increase in deaths, Vietnam with seven deaths (up 133.33%), and the Philippines with 317 deaths (up 56.16%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 1,697 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 19.93% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, the highest number of deaths was recorded in Iran (Islamic Republic) with 482 deaths (up 4.1%), South Korea with 397 deaths (up 20.3%), the Philippines with 317 deaths (up 56.16%), and India with 293 deaths (down 15.8%).
The total number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days was 4,071. This accounts for 27.64 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, which totaled 14,730. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,655 deaths.
