This week's Covid-19 statistics in Africa show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, three countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 11 others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Côte d'Ivoire, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Kenya, and Madagascar. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, August 18, 2022, amounted to 14, with weekly growth above 0 percent.
Côte d'Ivoire ranks first, with a 200 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded six deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's reported two deaths.
Next is Ethiopia, which recorded 100 percent more deaths than the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as two, higher than the previous week's one death. Mauritius recorded four deaths (up 100%), Kenya's deaths decreased by 0%, and Madagascar's deaths decreased by 0%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Africa occurred in Tunisia with 36 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 12.2% compared to the previous week. Following that, Morocco reported nine deaths (down 35.71%), Côte d'Ivoire recorded six deaths (up 200%), Mauritius recorded four deaths (up 100%), and Botswana recorded two deaths (down 0%).
Total Covid-19 deaths in Africa over the past seven days were recorded at 66. This accounts for 0.48 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 13,612. The number of deaths in Africa decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 88 deaths.
