The number of Covid-19 cases in Indonesia has increased over the past week. According to a Worldometers report, there were 2,687 weekly Covid-19 cases in the country during the period of June 1-7, 2022.
This number represents a 44% increase compared to the previous week, which saw 1,864 cases. This increase in weekly Covid-19 cases places Indonesia second highest in Southeast Asia.
Brunei Darussalam recorded the highest increase in weekly Covid-19 cases in Southeast Asia, with a 50% rise from 1,653 to 2,487 infections between June 1-7, 2022.
The Philippines experienced a 0.8% increase in weekly Covid-19 cases. Meanwhile, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam saw decreases in weekly Covid-19 cases of 7%, 11%, and 19%, respectively.
Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar also experienced decreases in weekly Covid-19 cases of 33%, 34%, and 38%, respectively. Timor Leste had the lowest ranking in Southeast Asia, with a 48% decrease in Covid-19 cases.
Although Covid-19 cases in Indonesia increased last week, UI FKM epidemiologist Pandu Riono is optimistic that the Covid-19 pandemic in the country is under control. This is because herd immunity has been well established.
Furthermore, the surge in Covid-19 cases did not occur after the 2022 Eid al-Fitr exodus. "Transmission may have increased, but a month after the exodus, there was no increase in cases," said Pandu, as quoted by Kumparan.com on Wednesday (June 8, 2022).
Nevertheless, the public is still urged to diligently implement the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap. In addition, people are urged to avoid crowds and reduce mobility.
