Hundreds of Covid-19 Positive Cases Found in Traditional Market

Traditional markets contributed to COVID-19 transmission clusters in Indonesia, particularly after Eid al-Fitr. By Tuesday, June 16th, at least 573 positive cases had been identified, with 32 deaths. These infected patients were located in 110 locations across 22 provinces.

West Sumatra had the highest number of positive COVID-19 cases originating from traditional market clusters. Although only 6 locations were identified as sources of infection, 120 positive cases were found, resulting in 3 deaths. East Java followed with 111 positive cases and 13 deaths, stemming from 32 infected traditional market locations.

The COVID-19 cases from these market clusters predominantly affected traders due to the minimal implementation of health protocols in these public spaces. Furthermore, the use of cash posed a potential medium for COVID-19 transmission.
