The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reported 245 cases of atypical progressive acute kidney injury (AKI) spread across 26 provinces in Indonesia as of October 23, 2022. The majority of these cases affected children under five years old.
Specifically, 66 cases are still undergoing treatment, 38 have recovered, and 141 have died.
“The fatality rate is quite high, at 57.6%,” said Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, as quoted by Katadata.co.id on Monday (October 24).
By province, Jakarta had the highest number of acute kidney injury cases with a total of 55. Of these, 27 died, 22 are undergoing treatment, and 6 have recovered.
Next, West Java recorded a total of 34 patients, with 18 deaths, 15 undergoing treatment, and 1 recovery.
Then, Aceh recorded 28 patients, comprising 21 deaths, 5 undergoing treatment, and 2 recoveries.
Previously, the government suspected that the cause of acute kidney injury was a solvent in syrup medicines, namely propylene glycol. The Ministry of Health took steps to temporarily halt the sale of syrup medicines deemed unsafe after testing.
