North Sumatra had the 19th highest prevalence of stunting in Indonesia in 2022. Based on the Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI) by the Ministry of Health, the prevalence of stunting in this province was 21.1% that year.
North Sumatra actually managed to reduce the number of stunted children by 4.7 percentage points from the previous year. In 2021, the prevalence of stunting in this province reached 25.8%.
Based on its regions, 21 regencies/cities in North Sumatra had a prevalence of stunting above the provincial average, while 12 other regencies/cities were below the average.
South Tapanuli Regency had the highest prevalence of stunting in North Sumatra in 2022, reaching 39.4%. This figure jumped 8.6 percentage points from 2021, which was 30.8%.
Padang Lawas Regency ranked second in North Sumatra with a stunting prevalence of 35.8%. This was followed by Mandailing Natal Regency with a stunting prevalence of 34.2%.
The lowest prevalence of stunting in North Sumatra was in North Labuhan Batu Regency, at 7.3%. On the other hand, Medan City ranked 27th in the province with a stunting rate of 15.4%.
