This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a contrast to the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, 12 countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 15 others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Kazakhstan, Singapore, the Philippines, Cyprus, and Iran (Islamic Republic). The total deaths in these five countries as of Monday, August 8, 2022, amounted to 596, with a weekly growth exceeding 46.82 percent.
Kazakhstan recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 100 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded two deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's report of only one death.
Singapore follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 62.5 percent. The number of deaths reported in this country was 39, while the previous week recorded 24 deaths.
Among the top five, other countries include the Philippines with a 59.09% increase in deaths, Cyprus with 24 deaths (up 50%), and Iran (Islamic Republic) with 461 deaths (up 46.82%).
Looking at the number of death reports, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan with 932 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 42.29% compared to the previous week. Following that, Iran (Islamic Republic) reported the second highest number of deaths with 461 (up 46.82%), India recorded 332 deaths (up 3.11%), Taiwan recorded 294 deaths (down 11.18%), and South Korea recorded 209 deaths (up 20.11%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days reached 2,968. This accounts for 20.9 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 14,203 deaths. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,535 deaths.
