Vaccination has suppressed the death toll and hospitalizations due to the Covid-19 coronavirus in the United States (US). This is illustrated in research by Yale University and the Commonwealth Fund published in early July 2021.
The research used two scenario models based on incidence data, hospitalization trends, and deaths in the US from October 2020 to June 2021. The first model was conducted without considering vaccination, while the second considered vaccination at half the current speed.
Through the first scenario, the absence of coronavirus vaccination is estimated to have added 279,000 deaths in the US by June 30, 2021. The number of hospitalizations in the US would also have increased by 1.25 million patients by the end of June 2021.
If the coronavirus vaccination program proceeded at 50% speed, the number of deaths in the US would only have increased by 121,000 by June 30, 2021. The number of hospitalizations in the US would also have only increased by 450,000 patients in the same period.
Therefore, vaccination is crucial amidst the surge in coronavirus cases due to the Delta variant spreading worldwide. Besides vaccination, the public is urged to diligently implement the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands with soap.
