The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.58 million cases by Wednesday, June 7, 2023. According to GISAID data, Saint Lucia recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 171 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Saint Lucia currently represents 0 percent of the global total.
Barbados follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in this country increased by 11.11 percent, with 190 new cases reported. Daily statistics show an 11.11 percent increase in new Omicron cases compared to the previous day, which recorded 171 cases.
Next is China (PRC), with an increase of 33,604 Omicron cases (up 3.39%). France saw a 2.59 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 363,810 cases compared to the previous week, and Jamaica saw a 1.79 percent increase, reaching 3,068 cases compared to the previous week.
In Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases increased to 38,013, a 0.02 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
