This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decrease in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Seven countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while eight others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Mexico, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, and the United States. The total deaths in these five countries for the week ending December 11, 2022, were 1,938, representing a weekly growth of over 15.51 percent.
Mexico recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 373.33 percent. Worldometer recorded 142 deaths in the country, up from 30 the previous week.
Colombia followed with a 100 percent weekly increase in deaths. The country reported 32 deaths, compared to 16 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Paraguay saw a 60% increase in deaths, Peru reported 154 deaths (a 54% increase), and the United States saw a 15.51% increase in deaths.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas was in the United States, with 1,594 deaths. This represents a 15.51% increase compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 693 deaths (up 15.12%), Chile 165 deaths (down 15.82%), Peru 154 deaths (up 54%), and Mexico 142 deaths (up 373.33%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 2,900. This accounts for 35.1 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 8,263. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which totaled 2,562.
