The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.78 million cases by Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Based on GISAID data, the Dominican Republic recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 288 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in the Dominican Republic currently represents 0.01 percent of the global total.
Next is Venezuela, which recorded a 53.23 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 3.26 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Then, Cape Verde reported 284 additional Omicron cases (a 27.35% increase), French Guiana saw a 26.91 percent increase to 849 cases compared to the previous week, and Pakistan reported 1,175 additional Omicron cases (a 25.13% increase).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases increased to 16,432, a 0.05 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
