This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Seven countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while eight others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Trinidad and Tobago, Paraguay, Canada, Honduras, and Peru. A total of 718 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Tuesday, August 23, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 15.57 percent.
Trinidad and Tobago recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 133.33 percent. Worldometer recorded 21 deaths in the country, up from nine the previous week.
Next is Paraguay, which recorded 75.68 percent more deaths than the previous week. The country reported 65 more deaths than the previous week's 37. Canada reported 235 deaths (up 50.64%), Honduras saw a 22.22% increase in deaths, and Peru reported 386 deaths (up 15.57%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 1,970 deaths. This represents a 9.92% decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil reported 1,037 deaths (down 29.26%), Peru reported 386 deaths (up 15.57%), Mexico reported 357 deaths (down 13.35%), and Canada reported 235 deaths (up 50.64%).
A total of 4,563 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 33.66 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 13,557. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which saw 5,107 deaths.
