Activity levels in various countries have yet to return to pre-COVID-19 pandemic normalcy. This is evident from the Global Normalcy Index scores, which remain below 100, the pre-pandemic level. However, Hong Kong's score is close to that level, at 96.3.
New Zealand's normalcy level is next, at 87.8. Pakistan and Nigeria are both around 84. Ukraine and Romania's normalcy levels are 83.6 and 82.1, respectively.
Denmark's normalcy level is recorded at 81.3. In Egypt, the normalcy level reaches 81.2. The values for Israel and Mexico are not far different, at 80.4 and 80.2 respectively.
Globally, the normalcy level stands at 66, or about halfway to the pre-pandemic level. Some activities that are starting to recover include city traffic congestion and time spent outdoors.
The Economist measures this index using three indicators. First, transportation and travel, such as traffic congestion, public transportation usage, and the number of flights.
Second, recreation and entertainment, including time spent outdoors, cinema revenue, and the number of spectators at sporting events. Third, retail and work, including the number of store visitors and office worker occupancy.
