Percentage of Indonesian Citizens Who Smoke Tobacco and Vape 2023-2025

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), among the Indonesian population aged 15 years and above, 28.68% will be tobacco smokers in 2025.

This percentage of tobacco smokers tends to be stagnant at 28%, similar to 2023 and 2024.

According to BPS, one of the factors contributing to many Indonesians smoking is social construction.

"Tobacco smoking plays an important role in the formation of male identity and is part of the social construction of masculinity," BPS stated in its 2025 Health Statistics Profile.

"Therefore, young people receive ambiguous messages about smoking. On one hand, they are given information about the harmful effects of smoking, while on the other hand, they live in an environment where smoking is deeply rooted and accepted," it continued.

In addition to tobacco smoking, 1.22% of the population aged 15 years and above will consume e-cigarettes or vapes in 2025.

This percentage of e-cigarette consumers has decreased compared to previous years, as shown in the graph.

According to BPS, this decline indicates an increase in public awareness about the dangers of e-cigarettes.

BPS also found that e-cigarettes are more accessible to urban residents than rural ones.

"Urban residents have a higher percentage of e-cigarette users, at 1.38%, compared to rural areas at 0.98%," BPS said.

"This indicates easier access to e-cigarette products in urban areas," it added.
