Distribution of Health Human Resources in Indonesia's Disadvantaged Regions in 2024

According to the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), the number of health human resources (HR) in health service facilities in Indonesia totaled 2.15 million people in 2024.

This figure comprises 1.37 million health workers (63.97%), 566,727 health support personnel (27.7%), and 207,171 medical personnel (9.65%).

According to Kemenkes, the number of health workers in underdeveloped regions in 2024 was 74,352 people.

Kemenkes' reference for underdeveloped regions is Presidential Regulation Number 63 of 2020 concerning the Determination of Underdeveloped Regions for 2020-2024, which designates 62 underdeveloped regencies across 15 provinces.

By profession, the largest number of health workers in underdeveloped regions are nursing personnel, followed by midwifery personnel and health support personnel.

Here are the details of the distribution of health HR in Indonesia's underdeveloped regions in 2024 by profession:

• Nursing: 24,709 people
• Midwifery: 17,783 people
• Health support: 12,574 people
• Public health: 4,767 people
• Medical: 3,222 people
• Pharmacy: 3,194 people
• Biomedical engineering: 2,384 people
• Nutrition: 2,341 people
• Environmental health: 1,799 people
• Medical technical personnel: 1,347 people
• Physical therapy: 151 people
• Traditional health: 63 people
• Clinical psychology: 18 people

By region, most of the health HR in underdeveloped regions are distributed in East Nusa Tenggara Province with 24,986 people, Maluku with 8,706 people, and North Sumatra with 6,516 people.

The distribution of health HR in underdeveloped regions, Kemenkes explained, is in line with the large number of underdeveloped regencies designated by the government.

"East Nusa Tenggara and Maluku provinces have the highest number of underdeveloped regencies compared to other provinces," Kemenkes explained in its report.
