The Indonesian Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) projects that the Indonesian food and drug market will reach Rp4,674 trillion in 2025, contributing 8.7% to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“This figure indicates that food and drugs are not only a pillar of health but also a pillar of our national economy,” said BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (September 15, 2025).
Based on category, the market for drugs and herbal medicines is projected to have the largest value, namely Rp4,388 trillion in 2025, equivalent to 4.73% of Indonesia's GDP.
The processed food market is expected to contribute Rp176.3 trillion or 9.80%, and the cosmetics market will reach Rp110.2 trillion or 6.74% of GDP.
“However, (consumer protection) the challenge is significant, as the circulation of products containing hazardous substances that risk damaging organs, increasing the risk of cancer, and causing death remains rampant,” said Taruna.
According to Taruna, supervision cannot only target finished products but also the raw material supply chain.
“As long as hazardous materials are easily obtained, misuse in production is still very likely to occur. Therefore, we must move together from upstream with cross-sectoral collaboration,” he said.
