A report by IDN Research Institute and Populix reveals a gap in perceived emotional support for childcare among young parents in major Indonesian cities.
Sixty-two percent of Gen Z and Millennial parents surveyed reported experiencing mental fatigue due to childcare. Fifty-eight percent felt alone in making childcare decisions, and 47% relied on friends or family for childcare assistance.
"Amidst delayed marriages and changing household compositions, friends are no longer just friends; they are partners in navigating emotional burdens," wrote IDN Research Institute in its *Indonesia Millennial and Gen Z Report 2026*.
Furthermore, 39% of young parents surveyed felt judged for choosing alternative parenting styles. The survey also found that 78% of mothers in Indonesia used social media as a source of information on childcare and as a means of solidarity with others.
The survey involved 1,500 respondents, comprising 750 Millennials and 750 Gen Z respondents spread across 12 major Indonesian cities. IDN Research Institute defined Millennials as those aged 29-44 and Gen Z as those aged 13-28 in 2025.
Data collection was conducted from February to April 2025 through in-depth interviews.
