The Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) found 356,638 people with HIV (ODHIV) in Indonesia in March 2025. This figure is derived from an estimate of 564,000 ODHIV who are estimated to still be alive and need to be found to receive treatment.
The 356,638 ODHIV who know their status represent 63% of the total estimate. Of those who know their status, 67% are undergoing Antiretroviral (ARV) treatment, and 55% are still under treatment with suppressed or very low viral loads.
"Case detection remains a challenge, and it's not uncommon for individuals to disappear during follow-up. This results in 95% of ODHIV who are alive and aware of their status remaining undetected," said Ina Agustina Isturini, Director of Infectious Diseases at Kemenkes, in an online press conference on Friday (20/6/2025).
Based on age, most living ODHIV are found in the 25-49 age group, representing 74%.
The following is the proportion of living ODHIV in Indonesia by age group as of March 2025:
- 0–4 years: 0%
- 5–14 years: 2%
- 15–19 years: 2%
- 20–24 years: 9%
- 25–49 years: 74%
- Over 50 years: 13%
Kemenkes notes that the 0% proportion does not mean that no cases were detected at all. "The 0-4 year age group actually has a small number of cases (0.0 something). Transmission usually occurs from mother to child during pregnancy," said Ina.
