According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the global COVID-19 positivity rate increased in May 2025.
The positivity rate is the ratio of the number of people infected with the virus to the number of people tested.
A high positivity rate indicates a high risk of disease transmission, and vice versa.
Based on WHO surveys, on April 27, 2025, the global COVID-19 positivity rate was still 4.1%. This means that out of every 100 people tested, 4 were infected with the disease.
Then, on May 18, 2025, the figure rose to 4.8%. In other words, out of every 100 people tested, 4 to 5 were confirmed positive for COVID-19.
When broken down by region, during this period, an increase in the COVID-19 positivity rate occurred in Africa, Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Western Pacific. Meanwhile, the figures decreased in the Americas and the Eastern Mediterranean.
The most significant increase occurred in Southeast Asia, where the positivity rate rose by approximately 4 percentage points from 0.93% to 5%.
