The proportion of wealthy individuals with diabetes mellitus is higher than that of poor individuals.
This is evident from the report of the *2023 Indonesian Health Survey* released by the Ministry of Health.
According to the report, in 2023, the national prevalence of diabetes mellitus reached 1.7%.
This means that out of the entire surveyed population, 1.7% had been diagnosed by a doctor with diabetes mellitus.
This survey was conducted on approximately 877,000 population samples of all ages spread across 38 provinces in Indonesia.
However, the prevalence varies when broken down by economic status.
The highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus is in the highest economic group or wealthy individuals, reaching 2.5%.
Prevalence then decreases with lower economic capacity.
The lowest economic group or poor individuals have the lowest prevalence of diabetes mellitus, only 0.9%, as shown in the graph.
Nevertheless, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that people with more money tend to be healthier than those with less money.
"What's the difference between someone earning Rp15 million and Rp5 million? They're definitely healthier and smarter. If they weren't healthy and smart, they wouldn't be earning Rp15 million; they'd be earning Rp5 million," Budi said, as reported by *Katadata.co.id*, Monday (May 19, 2025).
