According to Manpower Ministry (Kemenaker) processed data from the Manpower Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan), there were 462,241 workplace accidents in Indonesia throughout 2024.
These workplace accidents comprised 423,644 cases involving BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participants who are wage recipients (PU); 34,364 cases involving non-wage recipients (BPU); and 4,233 cases in the construction sector.
East Java had the highest number of workplace accidents nationally in 2024, reaching 80,771 cases.
Conversely, West Sulawesi had the lowest number of workplace accidents, with 125 cases. This was followed by Maluku with 162 cases and Gorontalo with 249 cases.
The following is a list of the 10 provinces with the highest number of workplace accidents nationally in 2024:
1. East Java: 80,771 cases
2. West Java: 79,768 cases
3. Central Java: 58,956 cases
4. Banten: 34,446 cases
5. Riau: 31,866 cases
6. Jakarta: 29,008 cases
7. North Sumatra: 23,739 cases
8. Riau Islands: 22,551 cases
9. Yogyakarta: 12,940 cases
10. East Kalimantan: 11,945 cases.
Based on Manpower Minister Regulation Number 26 of 2015, a workplace accident is an accident that occurs in the context of employment, including accidents during commutes to and from work, as well as occupational diseases (PAK).
Occupational diseases (PAK) are illnesses caused by work activities and/or the work environment. There are five categories of causes for PAK:
1. Physical factors: Extreme temperatures, noise, lighting, air pressure, etc.
2. Chemical factors: Chemical substances in the form of dust, vapor, gas, solutions, etc.
3. Biological factors: Bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.
4. Ergonomic factors: Lifting heavy objects, awkward working postures, static working postures, repetitive movements, etc.
5. Psychosocial factors: Excessive workload, monotonous work, stress from interpersonal relationships in the workplace, work location, etc.
