This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Seventeen countries recorded increased deaths this week, while eight others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Nepal, Japan, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, and Iran (Islamic Republic). The total deaths in these five countries as of Monday, August 1, 2022, amounted to 947, with a weekly growth exceeding 55.14 percent.
Nepal ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths growing by 1,100 percent. Worldometer recorded 12 deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's single death.
Japan follows, with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 126.84 percent. The country reported 617 deaths, compared to 272 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Sri Lanka with 19 deaths (up 111.11%), Saudi Arabia with 12 deaths (up 71.43%), and Iran (Islamic Republic) with a 55.14% increase in deaths.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, Japan recorded the highest number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days, with 617 fatalities. This represents a 126.84% increase compared to the previous week. Following Japan, Taiwan reported 362 deaths (down 13.81%), India 324 deaths (up 3.18%), Iran (Islamic Republic) 287 deaths (up 55.14%), and Thailand 232 deaths (up 44.1%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days reached 2,545. This accounts for 18.45 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, which totaled 13,793. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 1,976 deaths.
