Cases of atypical progressive acute kidney injury (AKI) have again increased in Indonesia. According to a report from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), there were 269 cases of acute kidney injury in 27 provinces as of October 26, 2022.
This number is up by 24 cases compared to October 23, 2022, which recorded 245 cases. Meanwhile, the death toll from acute kidney injury also increased, reaching 157 cases. Previously, the death toll was reported as 143 cases.
"There are 73 cases currently hospitalized, 157 deaths, meaning it's equivalent to 58% (of the total cases), and 39 cases have recovered," said Kemenkes spokesperson Mohammad Syahril in a press conference on Thursday (27/10).
Jakarta still dominates the number of acute kidney injury cases with 57 cases, followed by West Java with 36 cases, Aceh with 30 cases, East Java with 25 cases, and West Sumatra with 19 cases.
Syahril explained that the main characteristic of acute kidney failure sufferers in toddlers is impaired urination. This ranges from a decrease in urination frequency to no urination at all.
In addition, he continued, the early symptoms of this disease are accompanied by fever, weakness, and decreased appetite in toddlers.
Previously, the Kemenkes stated that biopsy results on the bodies of acute kidney injury patients showed kidney damage caused by the compound ethylene glycol (EG). This compound is suspected to originate from syrup medicine.
