Between 2000 and 2019, Indonesia generated between 5 and 19 million tons of food waste per year from consumption alone, excluding food waste from production and distribution stages.

Food waste in large cities amounted to 0.210 kilograms/person/day, while in medium-sized and small cities it was 0.088 kilograms/person/day.

In comparison, the average food waste generated by residents of metropolitan cities is 4.3 times higher than that of residents of medium-sized and small cities.

Bappenas obtained these figures from measurements of food waste generation at three survey locations: Bandung City, Pekanbaru City, and Tabanan Regency.

"The food waste generation figures from the Bandung City survey were used to represent metropolitan cities," stated the Bappenas team in their report.

"The results of the Pekanbaru City survey were used to represent large cities, while the results of the Tabanan Regency survey were used to represent medium-sized and small cities," they continued.
